The license file binds the virtual firewall to specific resources (vCPUs, RAM, throughput) and subscription periods (1-year, 3-year, or perpetual).

Access your FortiGate VM via its IP address in a web browser. Log in (Default: username admin , no password).

: Log in to your FortiGate VM (default credentials are often with no password for new installs). Navigate to License Settings and locate the Virtual Machine Upload File : Click on the FortiGate VM License

If your hardware fails, you can transfer the license to a new VM. This requires de-authorizing the old license via the Fortinet Support Portal and generating a new download link.

Once you have the .lic file, follow these steps to activate your firewall:

Go to support.fortinet.com . If you don't have an account, create one (use your corporate email).

Unlike hardware firewalls which connect to FortiGuard automatically, the VM requires a manual license file.
