"Friends" was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, two experienced television writers and producers. The idea for the show was born out of a conversation between Crane and Kauffman, who were looking to create a sitcom that would appeal to a young adult audience. The show was initially titled "Insomnia Cafe" and was pitched to several networks before being picked up by NBC.

They had a ritual. Every Thursday, “Family Dinner.” Not because they were related, but because they had chosen each other. They’d sit on that lumpy sofa, pass around a bottle of two-dollar wine, and talk about everything except the future. The future was a rumor. What mattered was now: the way Maggie could make Leo snort milk through his nose, the way Paul would light a cigarette and tilt his head, watching Claire like she was a photograph he was trying to understand.

Modern shows like New Girl , The Big Bang Theory , and How I Met Your Mother all owe a direct debt to the six chairs in Central Perk. The show’s arrival on Netflix in 2015 (and later on HBO Max/Max) introduced a generation of Gen Z viewers to the show, proving that the chemistry of those six actors in 1994 is timeless.
