The Espheni are not mindless monsters. They have a caste system, a history (they lost a previous war to the Volm), and even a kind of perverted honor. The Skitter rebellion shows that oppression creates resistance in any species. The real villain is the system of the hive mind — not the individual alien.

Tom is guided by the Dornia (the Espheni’s ancient enemy) for a final, all-out assault to reclaim Earth.

Characters like Margaret (a former collaborator who wore a harness) and Karen (a true believer in the Espheni) force the audience to ask: Is surrender evil, or pragmatic? The show refuses easy answers. In Season 3, a human collaborator explains: "I traded information for my daughter’s life. Judge me if you want."
