For those interested in learning more about Banduvah Akuru, we recommend:
For the untrained eye, all Maldivian scripts look like waves or Arabic. Here is a quick cheat sheet: banduvah akuru
Banduvah Akuru has undergone significant changes throughout its history. The earliest known examples of the script date back to the 12th century CE, during the medieval period of the Maldives. During this time, the script was used to write Buddhist texts, indicating the strong influence of Buddhism in the Maldives. For those interested in learning more about Banduvah
of how these letters are identified in a specific piece of Maldivian poetry? During this time, the script was used to
| Feature | Description | |---------|-------------| | | Two or more standard letters merged into a single complex glyph. | | Inverted letters | Standard letters written upside down or mirrored. | | Broken letters | Missing strokes, incomplete circles, or lines crossing where they shouldn't. | | Stacked forms | One letter written above another, sharing a common vowel stroke. | | Dots and circles | Added to letters to change their "power" (not sound). | | No vowel signs | Sometimes vowels are omitted entirely, leaving only consonant skeletons. |
If you want to see Banduvah Akuru in its purest form, you look at the Loamaafaanu (Copper Plates). These are the most significant historical documents in Maldivian history. Written on durable copper sheets, they survived the humid, corrosive tropical climate for centuries.
For the average visitor to Malé, the capital’s streets are signed in Thaana —the current, flowing script of the Dhivehi language. But for historians and epigraphers, Banduvah Akuru represents the "lost link." It is the ghost script carved into coral stone mosques, copper plates ( Loamaafaanu ), and ancient Buddhist stupas. But what exactly is Banduvah Akuru? Why did it vanish? And what secrets is it only now beginning to reveal?
