Office Starter 2010 was brilliant marketing disguised as a charity. It solved the "I don't have Office" problem by giving the user just enough rope to hang themselves.

The most visible difference was a permanent advertisement pane located in the lower right-hand corner of the window. This pane displayed rotating ads for Microsoft products and services. While it could be minimized, it could never be fully turned off, consuming screen real estate and serving as a constant reminder that the user was on the "free tier."
