The story follows a familiar cast (Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya, Youmu) as they investigate a mysterious “black water” seeping into Gensokyo, which corrupts the land and unleashes new threats. Unlike mainline games, there is no traditional “boss rush” format — instead, you explore stages, solve simple puzzles, and fight enemies in side-scrolling segments with a unique resource system.
And so, Gensokyo returned to its peaceful existence, with the Touhou characters ever vigilant, ready to defend their home against any future threats.
Set in a distinct timeline, the narrative explores the concept of "phantasms" being captured in scrolls. It allows players to play through different scenarios featuring a massive roster of characters, unlocking new story beats and musical tracks as they progress.
