The term “comrade” (同志, tóngzhì ) carries a unique double life. In official political discourse, it means “fellow member of the cause.” But within Chinese-speaking LGBTQ+ communities, it has been reclaimed as a subtle, coded term for gay men and, by extension, queer identity.
