In the mid-2000s, China had no legal censorship rating system for LGBTQ+ content in theaters. Explicit gay themes were often banned or heavily cut. Thus, the best comrade movies emerged from the independent film scene, festival circuits, and Taiwan’s more open environment.

The term “comrade” (同志, tóngzhì ) carries a unique double life. In official political discourse, it means “fellow member of the cause.” But within Chinese-speaking LGBTQ+ communities, it has been reclaimed as a subtle, coded term for gay men and, by extension, queer identity. The “Comrade Movie,” therefore, is not a single film but a genre: films centered on same-sex love, desire, and identity within the cultural and political constraints of Greater China.
