Pmt Tooling

Unlike conventional tool steels, which are cast and forged from molten metal, PMT materials are produced through a sophisticated process of gas atomization. Molten steel is sprayed into a fine powder, rapidly solidifying the microstructure. This powder is then consolidated under high pressure and heat (Hot Isostatic Pressing or HIP) to form a fully dense billet.

Beyond the Mold: Why PMT Tooling is the Backbone of High-Volume Manufacturing

At its core, PMT tooling refers to the dies, molds, punches, and core rods used primarily in the process. However, the term has evolved to encompass high-performance tool steels created via the powder metallurgy process itself—most notably High-Speed Steels (HSS) and high-alloy tool steels. Unlike conventional tool steels, which are cast and

For parts smaller than a grain of rice (e.g., hearing aid components), standard tooling lacks the necessary edge sharpness. PMT micro-tools (under 1mm diameter) are the only viable solution for producing these features.

The next evolution of PMT is "Smart Tooling." Manufacturers are embedding RFID chips into PMT holders. , allowing for fine levels of detail, molded-in

You can have the best injection molding machine on the floor, but if your PMT tooling is off by 0.001”, your parts will fail. Respect the tool. It’s where precision becomes profit.

This unique manufacturing method eliminates the segregation of carbides found in traditional steel, resulting in a material with a uniform, fine-grained structure.
