Year Of The Rabbit - Season 1

The plot thickens. The League of the Golden Dawn assassinates a cabinet minister. Rabbit is framed for the murder. He spends the episode chained to a radiator in the basement of the Yard while Mabel does the real detective work outside. It’s a bottle episode that relies entirely on Berry’s monologue skills as he talks to a rat he names "Captain Haddock."

Originally airing on Channel 4 in the UK and later finding a dedicated international audience via IFC, the series introduces viewers to a version of 19th-century London that is filthy, chaotic, and hilarious. Whether you are a long-time fan of Matt Berry or a newcomer looking for your next binge-watch, here is a comprehensive deep dive into the inaugural season of this cult classic. Year of the Rabbit - Season 1

Year of the Rabbit – Season 1 is not for everyone. Do not watch it if you require historical accuracy, subtle politeness, or a protagonist you’d want to have a beer with (Rabbit would drink your beer, insult your mother, and then crash your car). But if you love dense wordplay, anarchic violence, and a deep, beating heart underneath a filthy exterior, this is your show. The plot thickens

Critics praised the show for its breakneck pacing, moral complexity, and visual grandeur. Some Western reviewers compared it to 24 meets Game of Thrones (but with better historical grounding). He spends the episode chained to a radiator

Rabbit is framed for murder and must go on the run. Strauss and Mabel work to prove his innocence before he is caught and hanged.

The season’s overarching plot is deceptively complex. A group of anarchists called the "League of the Golden Dawn" (no relation to the real-world occult group, though the name is fitting) plans to blow up a railway bridge during Queen Victoria’s annual "Pudding Race." The conspirators include a nihilistic professor, a seductive spy, and a foreign prince with a grudge. Across just six episodes (each roughly 23 minutes long), Rabbit must dodge bullets, betrayals, and his own liver failure to save the monarchy—whether he wants to or not.

Throughout the six episodes of the first season, the narrative balances episodic "crimes of the week" with a larger overarching conspiracy involving a mysterious secret society. This keeps the stakes high and ensures that viewers are invested in the plot just as much as the punchlines.
