Before discussing mods, we must understand the engine. Metro 2033 (and its sequel, Last Light ) runs on the , a proprietary piece of technology developed by 4A Games. Unlike Unreal or Unity, the 4A Engine was built from the ground up for a single-player, linear cinematic experience.

The mod was never released. Kibermax vanished from forums in late 2017. Theories abound: some say 4A Games sent a cease-and-desist letter (unlikely, as they tolerate mods), others claim the technical debt was too high, and the most tragic theory suggests the source code was lost in a hard drive crash. Whatever the reason, the "Kibermax build" remains the Lost Ark of Metro modding.
