Cathy Oakley was one of the first designers to implement a "scan-to-farm" system. Every garment produced under her label comes with a QR code woven into the side seam. Scanning it shows the customer exactly which sheep provided the wool, which farmer grew the flax, and how much the seamstress was paid per hour. "Fashion has hidden behind romance for too long," Oakley says. "I want the customer to see the ledger."
