The B-plot is unexpectedly sharp. While the men are away, Fiona, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel (the latter in a Tangled -before- Tangled role as a passive victim) deal with Charming’s invasion. This is where the Polish version truly shines. Jerzy Stuhr, a legend of Polish cinema, voiced Donkey. His interpretation was less frantic than Eddie Murphy’s but packed with a different kind of neurotic, intellectual humor. Stuhr’s improvisational background allowed him to deliver lines with perfect comedic timing. Although Stuhr did not return for the fourth movie (being replaced by Krzysztof Kolberger due to scheduling conflicts), his performance in the first three films, including Shrek 3 , is legendary.

The film’s greatest sin is that Shrek—once a snarling, complex loner—becomes a reactive worrier. The satire of fairy tales gives way to satire of high school movies ( The Breakfast Club gets a direct nod).
