Set in the 1930s across the lush landscapes of West Sumatra and the bustling streets of Surabaya, the story follows (Herjunot Ali), a young man of mixed heritage who travels to his father's homeland in Batipuh. There, he falls deeply in love with the beautiful Hayati (Pevita Pearce). However, their union is blocked by the rigid Adat (customs) of the Minangkabau people, who reject Zainuddin due to his lack of pure ancestral ties.
The story follows Zainuddin, a mixed-race young man of Minangkabau and Makassarese descent. Orphaned and displaced, he travels to Batipuh, Sumatra, to connect with his father’s family. There, he falls deeply in love with Hayati, a local beauty. However, Zainuddin is rejected by his extended family and the local society because he is considered an outsider of low status.
