Without StarCraft 1 , there would be no League of Legends LCS, no Overwatch League, and likely no Twitch Rivals.

StarCraft's competitive scene began to take shape shortly after its release. The game's balance, depth, and replayability made it an ideal candidate for competitive play. In 2001, Blizzard launched the StarCraft: Brood War expansion pack, which added new campaigns, units, and game modes.

StarCraft was first conceived as a game that would combine elements of strategy, exploration, and sci-fi elements. Blizzard's team, led by game designer Dustin Browder and producer Jim Pitaro, worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. After months of development, StarCraft was finally released on March 31, 1998, for Microsoft Windows.

Brood War (the 1998 expansion) perfected this trinity by adding "caster" units (Defiler, Dark Archon, Science Vessel) that introduced game-changing spells like "Plague" and "Irradiate," raising the skill ceiling to the stratosphere.

: The Protoss represent "Purity of Form," the absolute peak of cerebral development, yet they are permanently broken by their own history and the loss of their homeworld, Aiur. The Moral Vacuum

: Descendants of human exiles, they rely on versatility, defensive structures , and mobile infrastructure like flying buildings.

Bob Fitch, the lead programmer, famously took the build back to the studio and scrapped almost everything. In a legendary "crunch" period spanning 18 months, the team rebuilt the game from scratch. They introduced three radically different factions: the tech-reliant , the psychic-swarming Protoss , and the grotesquely organic Zerg .
