The rook glows once, faintly, in the dark soil. Somewhere among the stars, a girl smiles.
Twenty years later, the film Zathura: A Space Adventure holds up remarkably well. The CGI on the Zorgons is dated, but the heart is not. It understands that the scariest thing in the universe isn't a black hole or a lizard monster. It is the distance that grows between two brothers who refuse to speak.
However, in the age of streaming, the film has found a second life. Parents who were teenagers in 2005 are now showing it to their children. Critics have revisited it, praising its lean 101-minute runtime and refusal to infantilize its audience. The children argue. They are mean. They make terrible mistakes. And they have to clean them up without a parent saving them. film zathura a space adventure
Unlike modern video games, Zathura is a mechanical marvel of tin and gears. However, the moment they turn the key and press the button, their house is ripped from its foundations and hurled into the deep reaches of space. To get back home, they must finish the game, navigating meteor showers, malfunctioning robots, and the ever-present threat of the Zorgons—a reptilian alien race hungry for heat and destruction. Jon Favreau’s Practical Magic
Directed by Jon Favreau (before he launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man ) and based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg (who also wrote Jumanji ), Zathura is far more than just Jumanji in space. It is a tight, tactile, and surprisingly emotional story about brotherhood, consequence, and the terrifying vastness of the cosmos. The rook glows once, faintly, in the dark soil
The Echo hesitates. Walter yells, “No. The game ends when someone reaches Zathura, not when someone surrenders.”
He is hilarious, paranoid, and surprisingly competent. However, the film saves its best card for the final act. The CGI on the Zorgons is dated, but the heart is not
Danny looks at the board. One square left: . He rolls—but the dice crumble. The Echo has disabled them.
Zathura: A Space Adventure is the ultimate "hidden gem" of the 2000s. It’s got everything:☄️ Meteor showers in the living room🤖 Malfunctioning giant robots🦎 Lizard-like Zorgons🍿 Heartwarming sibling bonding (eventually!)
To understand Zathura , one must first look at the legacy of Chris Van Allsburg. His 1981 picture book Jumanji became a cinematic phenomenon in 1995. However, Van Allsburg was not done with the concept of magical board games. In 2002, he released the picture book Zathura , a spiritual successor that picked up exactly where the previous story left off—literally.
Danny draws a card that lets any player skip another’s turn. To protect Lena, he accidentally skips Walter directly into square.
