When we close our eyes and hear the word "expanse," the first image that often flashes across the mind is the night sky: a bottomless well of blackness punctuated by distant, cold stars. But the concept of the expanse is far more than a synonym for "space." It is a psychological trigger, a physical reality, and a spiritual metaphor. From the arid deserts of our own planet to the liquid corridors of the ocean, and from the data streams of the digital age to the quiet rooms of our own minds, the expanse defines the limits of what we can see—and what we dare to imagine.
For most of us, this internal expanse is cluttered. We suffer from what Buddhists call the "monkey mind"—chattering, jumping from branch to branch, never still. We fear the internal expanse because it is dark and unknown. We fill it with social media (the digital expanse) to avoid looking at it.
