According to legend, a Benedictine monk from the Podlažice monastery in Bohemia (modern Czech Republic) broke his vows. As punishment, he was to be walled up alive. Desperate, the monk promised to create a book containing all human knowledge in one night to glorify the monastery forever. As midnight approached, realizing his human limits, he prayed not to God, but to Lucifer. The Devil completed the manuscript. In return, the monk added a full-page portrait of the Devil—making the book eternally cursed.
