To understand the labyrinth, one must first understand the ground it is built upon. The film is set in Spain in 1944, five years after the Spanish Civil War ended. While the war was officially over, the aftermath was a landscape of brutal repression. The Fascist Francoist regime was hunting down the remaining Republican militia hiding in the woods.

Del Toro leaves it open. However, clues suggest the fantastic is real: the mandrake root bleeds; the chalk door Ofelia draws works; when she returns from the Pale Man’s lair, she is covered in real dust. Ultimately, the film’s genius is that the question doesn’t matter. What matters is that Ofelia’s moral choice — to die rather than harm a child — is the only thing that can defeat Vidal’s ideology. In a world where fascism believes in “legacy through blood,” Ofelia proves that true legacy is built on sacrifice and love, not lineage.
