This paper explores nyimbo za injili za kuabudu (gospel worship songs) within the Swahili Christian tradition, focusing on their theological content, liturgical function, and cultural expression. Drawing from ethnographic observations and lyrical analysis of popular worship songs from Tanzania and Kenya, the study argues that these songs serve as vehicles for indigenous theology, communal identity, and spiritual formation. The paper examines how Swahili worship music blends biblical narratives with local musical idioms, creating a unique genre distinct from Western contemporary worship. Key themes include kuabudu kwa roho na kweli (worship in spirit and truth), the centrality of Yesu (Jesus), and the communal response to God’s neema (grace).
