The story begins in 1916. An occultist seeking to capture Death accidentally traps her brother: Dream (Tom Sturridge), the immortal personification of dreams and stories, also known as Morpheus. Instead of a quick escape, the series does something audacious: It leaves Dream in a glass cage for 106 years.
Netflix initially hesitated to renew it due to cost, but after a fan campaign and internal metrics revealed that Sandman had a 97% completion rate (people who started it finished it), was renewed for a second season. While the King of Dreams is imprisoned, the world falls apart. "Dream sickness" spreads; people fall asleep and never wake up, or they wake up unable to dream, losing their sanity. Once Dream finally breaks free in the present day (2022), he is weak, his tools are stolen—his helm, his ruby, and his pouch of dream sand—and his realm, The Dreaming, has fallen into ruin.
