The story begins in 1916. An occultist seeking to capture Death accidentally traps her brother: Dream (Tom Sturridge), the immortal personification of dreams and stories, also known as Morpheus. Instead of a quick escape, the series does something audacious: It leaves Dream in a glass cage for 106 years.

Netflix initially hesitated to renew it due to cost, but after a fan campaign and internal metrics revealed that Sandman had a 97% completion rate (people who started it finished it), was renewed for a second season. While the King of Dreams is imprisoned, the world falls apart. "Dream sickness" spreads; people fall asleep and never wake up, or they wake up unable to dream, losing their sanity.
