Riding the coattails of RE4’s success, Resident Evil 5 (2009) leaned heavily into action, introducing a fully integrated co-op system with Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar. It was a commercial smash but criticized for losing the horror identity. Resident Evil 6 (2012) took this to the extreme. It was a globetrotting, four-campaign epic that tried to be a Call of Duty-style action movie. While it sold well, it was critically panned for being bloated and losing the soul of the franchise.
