Born on March 26, 1952, in Milan, Italy, Giovanni Terzi, aka Tinto Brass, began his career in the film industry as a documentarian and editor. His early work was marked by a strong sense of social commentary, reflecting his left-wing politics and interest in exploring the human condition. In the late 1970s, Brass began to transition to feature filmmaking, making his debut with the drama Salon Kitty (1976), which already showcased his penchant for provocative storytelling.

After the Caligula debacle, Brass returned to Italy to make his most balanced film. The Key (La Chiave) is a sensual, slow-burn drama set in 1940s Venice. A middle-aged professor allows his young wife to read his diary, which details his voyeuristic fantasies about her sleeping with another man.
