While the Netflix series is a superb adaptation (9/10), David Nicholls’ prose is the true star. He writes internal monologues for Emma that no actor can fully speak. His descriptions of Dexter’s hangovers are medical in their precision. The book allows you to sit in the "in-between" moments that the camera has to skip.
