God.of War Ascension 2021 Jun 2026
In many ways, Ascension is the "metal album no one listened to." It is darker, more technical, and less accessible. It tries to answer the question: What made Kratos so angry in the first place? The answer, as the game shows, is that he was already broken before the deal with Ares.
Unlike previous titles where Kratos was fueled by a laser-focused vendetta against Zeus or Ares, Ascension explores a more fragile emotion: grief. The story takes place six months after Kratos, tricked by Ares into murdering his own wife and daughter, broke his blood oath with the God of War. As punishment, Kratos is stripped of his hope and imprisoned by the Furies—ancient beings who serve as the torturers of those who break oaths.

Progression unlocked new armor sets, weapons (swords, hammers, spears), and magic abilities. While it never rivaled Call of Duty , the multiplayer was surprisingly deep, offering a brutal, strategic experience where teamwork and environmental hazards (like the rotating blades of a Grecian forge) mattered as much as raw power. However, Ascension was not without its gameplay controversies. The developers introduced a grappling system tethered to the blades, allowing Kratos to tie enemies to the ground or swing them around. While cinematic, this feature was polarizing among hardcore fans who felt it disrupted the flow of combat.
The execution? Messy. The story lacks the tight mythology of God of War II or the emotional punch of 2018 . But it adds depth: you see Kratos’ hallucinations of his family, his failures, and his slow unraveling. It’s the first time the series asked, “What if the monster was also a victim?” Unlike previous titles where Kratos was fueled by
In multiplayer, you pledge allegiance to one of four gods, which determines your class and playstyle.
God of War: Ascension ultimately represents a transition point for the series. It was the final "classic" style God of War game before the franchise was completely reimagined in 2018. While it may not have reached the heights of God of War II or III for some, it offered a necessary look at Kratos’ humanity and provided some of the most technically impressive moments in the series' history. For fans wanting to see how the legend began, Ascension is an essential, albeit brutal, piece of the puzzle.
Visually, Ascension remains one of the most stunning titles on the PlayStation 3. Santa Monica Studio utilized every ounce of the console's power to deliver cinematic scale that rivaled God of War III. The opening sequence, featuring a battle against the Hecatonchires—a giant with a hundred hands whose body literally forms the prison Kratos is trapped in—set a high bar for environmental storytelling and boss design. The use of vibrant colors and intricate lighting helped the game stand out from the grittier, darker tones of its predecessors.
